Multiple sclerosis is, according to Wikipedia, a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (ZNS), the cause of which has still not been clarified despite many scientific attempts. Besides epilepsy, it is the most common neurological disease of young adulthood. About two thirds of MS patients notice the first symptoms between the ages of 20 and 40. Often the diagnosis is only made when they are in their 40’s, even 50’s. After closer examination of the patient’s medical history, it often becomes clear in such cases that symptoms were there before but were either not continuous or grave enough to be sufficiently observed, so that a treatment or diagnosis wasn’t justified. In the rest of the cases, the onset can occur before the age of 20 or after 40. MS can also occur in childhood and adolescence.
The illness is not curable, but the process can be positively influenced by several measures. Contrary to popular belief, MS doesn’t necessarily lead to serious disability. Even many years after the onset of the illness, the majority of the patients still remain ambulant. Multiple sclerosis however is not curable. The objective of all therapeutic measures is to maintain the patient’s everyday independence and to assure the best possible quality of life.
According to reports in the >>Zeitschrift aktiv<<, the official magazine for DMSG (German multiple sclerosis society), a diagnosis of MS doesn’t really limit sports activities.MS and doing sport don’t only go together very well, they also bring great therapeutic effects. Due to the fact that a diagnosis can be made more early, there are also more and more patients who, despite a MS diagnosis won’t, or hardly won’t, exhibit disabling symptoms.
Conclusion:
According to clients, training on a bellicon is very effective when the aim is to alleviate balance disorders after a typical MS attack. One patient noticed an obvious improvement after only a few days. This gentle swinging trains coordination and rhythm and the exercise could have a positive effect on spasticity.
