The nationwide and interdisciplinary functioning project “Schnecke” (= snail or cochlea, a part of the inner ear), in which our partner from the federal association for the advancement of posture and exercise is also involved, deals with three cognitive systems which are closely connected and very important for people’s ability to learn and perform, namely hearing, seeing and balance.

In this context, our sense of balance is an often underrated sense. Successful learning and our sense of balance are closely connected. The stimulation of this sense organ has a defining influence on neurophysiological metabolic processes. Now however, many adolescents are exhibiting a deficiency in their development ability to balance. The reason: lack of exercise and doing too many things sitting down. Furthermore, research at the Aalen high school in Germany confirms that students with bad balance score significantly lower marks.

Study should “sharpen the senses”

With a prospective study about neuro-sensorial learning advancement, it should now be clarified whether a targeted, academic training of balance and cognitive ability (without neglecting the learning matter) can also lead to improvements in the learning efficiency of German, mathematics and sport. The results should present a solid decision making basis on which to decide whether a diversely applied educational boost is advisable in this manner. In the complex intervention program for daily advancement of the ability to balance, swinging on the bellicon trampoline offers an important supportive measure.
